Volunteer Testimonial: 13 Years of Giving Back at The Downtown Centre
I started volunteering at The Downtown Centre 13 years ago, helping with the Thursday Drop-In group. This was my first time volunteering, and it gave me a chance to connect with the members — many of whom had little or no other social contacts.

Over time, I was invited to join the Downtown Management Committee, where my volunteering experience allowed me to provide valuable insights and feedback. My personal love for crafts has come in handy, especially when assisting with the knitting group at the Drop-In.
Cooking is another passion of mine, and I’ve been able to put this to use by cooking for the breakfast club. We even ran a cookery group for members, which was a great success. One of the Centre’s popular initiatives is a senior citizens’ group that meets once a month. When the original leader retired, we wanted to keep the group going, so I stepped up as lead volunteer with support from a committee of volunteers.
Another highlight for me has been helping with the Christmas Carol Service, where I accompanied the choir on piano. The Lisburn Downtown Centre offers many flexible opportunities for volunteers, from ad hoc to weekly opportunities. The Centre supports volunteers by matching tasks with personal interests, which makes the experience even more fulfilling.
Volunteering here has been an enriching journey, providing endless opportunities to make a difference and connect with our wonderful community.
